Project Overview
Originally constructed in the 1970s and having reached the end of its service life, the existing 175-metre-long Pier No. 2 was completely demolished and replaced with a modern high-capacity piled quay structure.
The project involved the removal of the existing block-type quay, dredging works in front of the berth to achieve the required operational depth, and the construction of a new piled quay approximately 445 metres in length, enabling the safe berthing of larger, higher-capacity vessels.
To provide the required operational draft, seabed dredging was carried out to –12.00 metres CD, with all dredged material transported and disposed of at approved offshore disposal sites.
Foundation System
The quay's foundation system was constructed using S355JR steel tubular piles, with a diameter of Ø1016 mm and a wall thickness of 16 mm, driven from land.
The foundation comprised:
- 208 steel tubular piles with a diameter of Ø914 mm and a length of 28 metres
- 265 steel tubular piles with a diameter of Ø1016 mm and a length of 32.5 metres
A total of 473 steel tubular piles were installed to form the structural foundation of the new quay.
The load-bearing performance of the piling system was verified through Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) testing, together with compression, tension, and lateral load tests, confirming compliance with the project's design criteria.
Port Equipment
To enhance the safety and operational efficiency of port operations, the following systems were supplied, installed, tested, and commissioned:
- Quick Release Hook (QRH) mooring systems
- 100-tonne mooring bollards
- Marine fender systems
