Star Refinery Terrace 3 Region (SPE) Construction Works Project

Additional site preparation works for the Star Refinery, which operates at a capacity of 10 million tons of crude oil annually over approximately 2,300 acres at the Petkim Peninsula, were carried out by ES Denizcilik. This project involved expansion works across an area of 345,000 m².

Under the scope of the project, comprehensive site preparation and infrastructure works were carried out over an area of 345,000 m² to meet the refinery’s expansion requirements. Large-scale excavation, filling, ground improvement, and infrastructure works were executed in full compliance with occupational health and safety regulations, environmental considerations, and international engineering standards.

Major Construction Works

The principal works executed within the project scope included:

  • 3,522,488 m³ of rock excavation

  • 1,045,000 m³ of fill material (0–60 mm)

  • 26,570 m² of gabion walls and slope protection works

  • 92,548 m of soil nails for soil-nailed retaining wall construction

  • 45,325 m³ of reinforced concrete foundations for tanks and pipe bridges

  • 125,560 m² of yard concrete paving

  • 35,000 m² of road concrete

  • 1,715 tons of steel pipeline infrastructure works

  • 54,800 m² of concrete road pavement

  • 6,220 m of HDPE underground piping

  • 5,560 m of open floodwater channels

  • 456 m of closed-section reinforced concrete channels

  • 213 tons of pipe bridges, pipe spools, and erection works

  • 370 m of precast panel emergency escape road construction

  • 10,000 m of underground drainage piping

  • 5,000 m of open stormwater channel construction

All works were completed using a fully integrated and coordinated execution approach.

Key Technical Achievements

Within the scope of the STAR Refinery additional site preparation works, ES Denizcilik successfully delivered:

  • 19 tank foundations, including the refinery’s largest tank, with a diameter of 92 m and a crude oil capacity of 140,000 tons

  • The highest gabion wall within the refinery area, reaching a height of 27.5 m

  • The longest soil nail applied on the refinery site, with a length of 24 m

These achievements clearly demonstrate the company’s engineering expertise and execution capability in large-scale industrial projects.

Operational Capacity and Schedule Management

During the project period, approximately 3,500,000 m³ of rock excavation and 1,000,000 m³ of fill works were completed within a remarkably short duration of one year. This performance was achieved through a strong equipment fleet and efficient site management.

At peak activity, the following equipment operated simultaneously on site:

  • 25 excavators

  • 4 rippers

  • 2 dozers

  • 4 graders

  • 6 rollers

  • 50 internal haulage trucks

During the most intensive phase of the project, 20,000 tons of fill material per day were transported from a quarry located 15 km away, placed, and processed on site.
